Week 1 – What We are Eating this Week and How Much We Spent on Groceries

I spent a lot on groceries this week, $199.25 to be exact. Ouch right? But we had two special occasions. One, my son’s 20th birthday and two, New Year’s Eve so I didn’t mind spending a little more.

The most expensive thing I purchased was a 70 ct bag of frozen pre-cooked shrimp on sale for $16.99. I also bought a pork tenderloin for $11.53 and a ham for $16.76 plus ground beef, a whole chicken, split breasts and a package of cocktail weenies and a pack of bacon.

Yesterday I asked the hubs to go into the store for me while I waited in the car. We just needed cocktail sauce. Ladies I know what your thinking. Big mistake on my part right? Sure enough a whole bag came out with him. Cheetos, Chips, Pop, and other assorted junk food came home with us and yes he did get the cocktail sauce. I rolled my eyes and did a mental head slap. It’s all good though lol.

Meals planned for the week are:

Dinners

  1. Tacos
  2. Grilled pork tenderloin, veggies and rolls
  3. Ham, mashed potatoes and glazed carrots
  4. Homemade chicken pot pie
  5. Ham and Corn Chowder
  6. Breakfast for dinner
  7. Leftovers

Lunches

  1. Leftovers everyday
  2. Salads
  3. Potato Salad
  4. Grilled Cheese

Breakfasts

  1. PBJ toasted
  2. Oatmeal with Fruit
  3. Eggo waffles
  4. Cereal
  5. Breakfast Sammies
  6. Cereal Bars

Snacks

  1. Pie
  2. Cake
  3. Popcorn
  4. Jell-O with fruit
  5. Olives and cheese
  6. Junk food in a bag
  7. I need to work on healthier options

I need to say this. Last week I didn’t feel like cooking so we went out. The restaurant we wanted to go to was packed and I didn’t feel like waiting nor did I want to be around that many people. We settled on another local restaurant because we wanted to support them but once again regretted our decision. Our meal was lack luster and very expensive for what we got. I get that food prices are skyrocketing but we truly had buyers remorse after this night out. The food was just not good. I had the same feeling after we tried Hello Fresh. Yes, it is all there for you but you still have to cook it and for the amount of food you get, just like the restaurant it just isn’t worth it to me. Until prices go down on food (if they ever do) I will continue to make as many amazing meals at home as I can and support the restaurants I trust and know well.

I want to try a new recipe this week for lunches. I still need a few ingredients that are not common in my pantry so I might put out a post on Instagram asking if I can mooch a little from my friends. The recipe is from a book I have checked out numerous times from the library and I finally decided to purchase the book. I’ll share that with you in another post.

Also, something a bit exciting for me…I have had a few people message me on Instagram privately and share their thoughts on the food shortages and price increases in their areas as well. I have already reached out to one of my friends and I will be sharing her grocery shopping experience where she lives in a separate post. If you would like to share with me your experience I would love to interview you! Please contact me on Instagram at Theprofessionaldomestic or you can email me at marymargaretripley@yahoo.com.

Sharing our experiences helps so much. I am already working on what to grow this upcoming season to specifically save money on food bills. Should be interesting. -MM

  1. I’m guessing the groceries will continue to skyrocket, so the garden will be extremely important. How are you doing on canning lids? We have been taking advantage on sales and canning meat.

    1. I suspect that too Kathy. I am good on camning lids for now. I bought a 100ct pack of regular mouth and have about 19 packs of wide mouth and 4 boxes of lids and bands that are brand new. That shortage scared the heck out of me. I have yet to can meat because I have so many freezers and our power (if it goes out) is one of the first on because the sewage treatment plant is right behind our house. Last year I planted strawberries and replanted the red raspberries but I want to expand on all of it. Scott seems to be on board. Adding blueberries and Rhubarb and asparagus plants. They will be a while to produce but have to start sometime right? Lol. The other fruits are doing nicely though. We had more than we could handle last year with our peaches.

      1. Remember too, as you plan to think calories, because they will be necessary! My DH has been calculating calories, to make certain we a balance with the fruits and greens.
