Grocery Shopping and Meal Planning 2024 Week 4 of 52

Week 3 was a good week. I made a double batch of chocolate chip, coconut, banana bread, a pumpkin pie, and an apple pie for us. Spaghetti leftovers on Monday, I made the French onion soup recipe from the cookbook my cousin sent me. One night we had pepper steak in the crockpot and one night I ate rice and frozen peas because the boys were both gone. We only ordered out once, pizza on Friday, and ate it two nights.

I went to the grocery store just once mid week to get cheese and onions and bread (kind of hard to make onion soup without those three things). I’ll add that to this week’s total.

Groceries yesterday cost us $71.38 which includes the mid week run.

I meal prepped a ton of stuff today for lunches for the week.

I also made chili today so we can have lots of leftovers with that, too.

On the docket this week, besides the chili, is cauliflower sausage soup, hotdogs (had a hankering) those pork chops I have talked about for two weeks (maybe lol), goulash, and whatever else I can do with what I have in the pantry.

Item I want to use in my pantry this week: these gnocchi I got in a gift basket for Christmas. Let’s see what I do with them.

Total spent on groceries so far in 2024 – $282.17

I have gotten a few comments from readers asking how I spend so little on groceries. Many say they are spending $250+ a week! That’s a lot of food in my world. I feed two guys and me with my grocery budget. Honestly, I would love to see another person’s grocery receipt just to see what they are buying. Anyone willing to send me a snapshot of their receipt? Just for informational purposes, only of course! 😉

Until next week- MM

Welcome to my Blog! My world is my husband and son (soon to be moving into his own home) and my step-children (fully grown) and our two cats who are definitely ying and yang. My day job is as Deputy Clerk of my home town in Western, NY but when I get home I have two side gigs, one as a professional private baker, and two, as an Etsy shop owner selling vintage and antique dishes and accessories. I have been gardening and growing my own food since my grandfather taught me at the ripe old age of 5. I stitch, I bake, I grow food, I can and preserve, I grocery shop to save money and eat well and boy do I have massive to-do lists. I hope you enjoy my day to day writings.

  1. You’re doing so well with your grocery bills!
I don’t keep a tab on grocery shopping because the husband often nips to the local shop for something. And when I do a big shop, I also buy toilettries, cleaning products etc. At a rough estimate though I’d say we spend 120€ a week on food, just for 2 of us. Less in the summer months when we can rely on fresh produce from the garden. I always bulk buy when possible (eg 10 quails for 10€). Our hens are on strike atm and I almost fainted when I had to pay 2.60€ for 6 free range eggs! Cost of fresh winter veg is ridiculous. 3.50€ for a tiny cauliflower. Basic food prices ( and I shop in Lidl which is one of the cheapest places) is 85cts for a litre of semi-skimmed milk. 2.50€ for 250g of butter. 16€/kg for beef mince. And 8€ for a small chicken.
    It all adds up!
