Week 5 – What we are Eating and How Much We Spent on Groceries 2022

Yesterday’s shopping trip was pretty small, thank goodness! Total spent was $86.63. I didn’t buy from Misfits this week.

The most expensive things I bought were bacon at $7.99 and believe it or not strawberries at a whopping $5.99. I guess I won’t buy strawberries again until they are on sale or growing in my garden!

I bought a few things that aren’t usually on my list, like a 32 oz container of Greek vanilla yogurt and lemons which I am going to use to make this fabulous Lemon Zucchini Bread from A Latte Food https://www.alattefood.com/lemon-zucchini-bread/ It is the best I have ever had and I still have a ton of frozen shredded zucchini from my garden I need to use.

I also bought ingredients to make 2 quiche. One for us and one for Scott to take to a friend’s house. Quiche is incredibly easy to make. Beat 6 eggs with 1-1/2 cups of either milk, cream or half and half (I use Lactaid so I can eat it without taking a pill) and salt and pepper to taste. That’s it! Then add whatever sounds good. I made one with just shredded cheese and frozen chopped spinach and one with ham, spinach and cheese. But the possibilities are endless especially when the garden is in full swing. I do add a tsp of garlic powder and parsley for more color and flavor too. Pour into an unbaked pie shell and bake at 350 degrees for 45 mins or so or until the center is not runny. You can totally used a store bought pie shell for this too!

I plan on making chicken and biscuits, beef and veggie soup and goulash this week. Otherwise I will get creative. Not sure what else will be on the menu.

For breakfasts the Quiche and Lemon Zucchini Bread will be the stars and lunches I bought cottage cheese and home-canned peaches and salads and leftovers for Scott. Big salads and pasta for lunches for Doug and I.

What do you plan on eating this week? -MM

Welcome to my Blog! My world is my husband and son (soon to be moving into his own home) and my step-children (fully grown) and our two cats who are definitely ying and yang. My day job is as Deputy Clerk of my home town in Western, NY but when I get home I have two side gigs, one as a professional private baker, and two, as an Etsy shop owner selling vintage and antique dishes and accessories. I have been gardening and growing my own food since my grandfather taught me at the ripe old age of 5. I stitch, I bake, I grow food, I can and preserve, I grocery shop to save money and eat well and boy do I have massive to-do lists. I hope you enjoy my day to day writings.

  1. Yummy! We are having potato soup, ham and beans, honey crisp chicken with egg rolls, and maybe pizza on Friday, or waffles. I need to go to the store and buy egg rolls, but everything else comes out of the pantry. Are your stores empty after that storm? We’ve been hearing that there’s no food!

    1. Honey Crisp Chicken with Egg rolls sounds interesting! Do you have more than one freezer? Our store shelves are good. Other than the truck being delayed a day after the storm 2 weeks ago we haven’t had any real shortages. There is another storm coming tomorrow but we have plenty of food and I have access to food pretty much any time if need be. It helps to have a key to the grocery store lol!

  2. I have never tried any of the mail order foods at all. We have a family of 6 (5 grown men) and they just don’t look like they would feed all of us. Granted that 2 have moved out but they still come eat. My grocery bill seems way higher. I wonder if its just the area I live in or what I buy. But it is definitely way less than eating out. I also have not been actually going in the store just doing pickup or Wal-Mart delivery. I have got to start buying healthier anti inflammatory meals. I love quiche so I am going to try yours. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I am glad you found my blog post useful Linda 😊. Yes, with a family as large as yours, mail order foods like Hello Fresh wouldn’t give them enough to eat. I think food costs have risen all over the country from what I am hearing. I would say my cost have just about doubled from a few years ago but it is still cheaper to cook at home than eat out.
